About

This site was known as the Quarantine in 1799, where those suspected of being infected with smallpox, yellow fever, cholera and typhus were detained in hospitals and shanties. The buildings were burnt down by a fearful, angry mob in 1858. This information is from the New York Times, 7/26/15 , at p. 2 (some verbatim), and http://lighthousemuseum.org/welcome/museum-site/.
