About

Bob Dylan had his first Philadelphia performance here, for legendary folk DJ Gene Shay, according to an interesting Web page at http://biffco.com/phila-sites/.

The earliest mention I see on Dylan in Philadelphia on newspapers.com is at https://www.newspapers.com/image/185319762/?terms=%22bob+dylan%22+philadelphia+%22ethical+society%22, saying that the show here, which was in 1961, was "one of Dylan's first concerts in Philadelphia." (Phila. Daily News, 10/7/78, p.2.) But referencing the posting above, I would think that Gene Shay would know the first one. I've seen references to Camden, NJ, concerts. Maybe Dylan played round and about the Philly area prior to this show. Here it says it was Spring of 1963, citing Gene Shay, https://www.newspapers.com/image/187176398/?terms=%22bob+dylan%22+philadelphia+%22ethical+society%22. The first reference, for 1961, says tickets were $.75, and the second one, for 1963, says $1.50. The 1961 date does not seem probable. The earliest Philly show at setlist.fm is Town Hall, 10/25/63, https://www.setlist.fm/setlists/bob-dylan-1bd6adb8.html?page=346. If you have more or better info, please comment below.
