A slave dealing company was here. The following information is from the Maine Antique Digest, June 2014, at p. 23-B, which was a report on a 3/27/14 auction sale at the Swann Galleries, NYC. The article has a picture of the slave dealer's business card for "Great Negro Mart, No. 87, Adams Street, Memphis, Tenn." It advertised Hill, Ware & Crisp's company. If you Google you will find quite a bit about the location on the Web, for ex., http://www.forksoftheroads.net/ser_boxley/nb_forrest.htm.

This location has been getting some hits on Cyber Plaque lately, perhaps because the African American museum in D.C. opened yesterday. I noticed this online: https://nmaahc.si.edu/object/nmaahc_2014.63.17?destination= explore/collection/search%3Fedan_q%3D%252A%253A%252A%26edan _fq%5B0%5D%3Dtopic%253A%2522 American%2520South%2522%26edan_fq%5B1%5D%3Ddate%253A% 25221860s%2522%26edan_local%3D1. [Sorry, I had to break up the URL to fit it on the page. Easiest thing to do: copy and paste the URL even with the breaks, then Google the URL. - Ed.]

If you Google "Great Negro Mart," you will find a number of examples of the advertisements for this wretched place.
