Ike Turner composed Rocket 88 while living here, and blues singer Bessie Smith died here. See Down in the Delta, by Roberta Sandler, in the Philadelphia Inquirer, 5/17/15, at p. N 1, 4. (The article said the building had earlier been a hospital.)
Online I see that Mr. Turner lived in Room 7.
There has long been a debate about what was the first rock and roll song. Some argue Rocket 88, which used distortion caused by a defective amplifier.
Playing around with Google's street view I see that the hotel has an historic marker.
